Mongwe Twins with their Mother

By Simamkele Teka

Kimberley – A graduation at Sol Plaatje University turned into a moment of hope and transformation for one Limpopo family when identical twins Cecilia and Surprise Mongwe became the first graduates in their family.

The sisters, who grew up in Dan’s Village in Tzaneen, walked across the stage side by side. For the Mongwe family, the day marked more than academic success. It carried the dreams of those who came before them and the expectations of those who will follow.

Raised in a community where opportunities are often limited, the twins faced financial pressures, the challenge of adapting to university life, and the weight of being pioneers in their family. They leaned on each other for strength and turned each obstacle into motivation.

“Our journey was not easy, but we always reminded ourselves why we started,” one of the twins said. “We wanted to change our story and inspire others back home.”

Their achievement is already resonating in Dan’s Village. Younger learners now see a clearer path to their own futures, inspired by two familiar faces who proved success is possible with determination and support.

Family members described the moment as life-changing. For them, the degrees represent more than qualifications. They are a symbol of progress, sacrifice, and new beginnings.

As Cecilia and Surprise step into their next chapter, they do so not only as graduates but as role models. Their story is a reminder that education can break barriers and open doors for entire communities.

At Sol Plaatje University, their graduation was one of many. For the Mongwe family, it is a milestone that will be remembered for generations
