The people of Kimberley and beyond are uniting in prayer and solidarity after a mudrush incident at Ekapa Mine’s Joint Shaft left five mineworkers trapped underground. The trapped workers, whose lives are hanging in the balance, have been without communication for over 24 hours, sparking an urgent search and rescue operation.

Sol Plaatje Municipality’s Emergency Services responded promptly, dispatching four emergency vehicles and 11 personnel to the scene. “We pledge our solidarity in this time of unimaginable distress,” said a spokesperson, echoing the sentiment of the community.

The rescue operation, underway at an estimated depth of 890 metres, is being led by Ekapa Mine’s management and specialist resources. The Sol Plaatje Emergency Services remains on standby, ready to provide support if needed.

Ekapa Mining, a key employer in Kimberley, has been working with the municipality on initiatives like repairing the bulk water supply infrastructure. The community is rallying behind the trapped workers and their families, holding them in prayers and thoughts.

The incident has brought the community closer, highlighting the value of human life and the importance of coming together in times of crisis.
