The South African Policing Union (SAPU) in the Northern Cape welcomes and appreciates the positive efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Management in advertising and initiating the process to fill critical vacant posts within the province. In a statement SAPU said that this development is a step in the right direction and aligns with SAPU’s long-standing call for the urgent filling of these posts to improve service delivery, boost morale, and enhance operational effectiveness within the police service.

The provincial leadership of SAPU also acknowledges that many stations and units have been operating under severe strain due to long-standing staff shortages. Sabata Tshabedi of SAPU told the Pixley Independent, “These vacancies have had a detrimental impact on crime prevention, investigations, and the general effectiveness of policing. We commend SAPS Management for taking the initiative to address this issue and encourage them to continue working towards strengthening policing capacity across the province.

“We further urge SAPS Management in the province to ensure that this recruitment process is conducted with the highest level of integrity, transparency, and fairness, it is our firm position that only qualified and experienced individuals must be considered for appointment.

“The process must uphold credibility and must not be tainted by favouritism, nepotism, or any other form of bias or undue influence.”

SAPU Northern Cape calls on the employer to make sure that the shortlisting and appointment processes are based solely on merit, and that equal opportunity is afforded to all eligible applicants, regardless of their background, affiliation, or internal connections.

Said Tshabedi,“It is imperative that the confidence of both SAPS employees and the public in the fairness and objectivity of the recruitment process is preserved.

“We will continue to monitor this process closely and will not hesitate to raise alarms if any irregularities are observed. We remain committed to supporting efforts that improve working conditions, ensure proper staffing, and ultimately enhance policing outcomes in the province.

“It is our belief that a transparent and fair recruitment process is not only in the interest of SAPS employees but also critical to restoring public trust and ensuring that the SAPS delivers on its constitutional mandate to protect and serve.”
