On 23 February 2024, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, co-founder and CEO of the Motsepe Foundation, gathered representatives from all 26 South African universities for the Future of Work, a platform for critical dialogue, and to mark the occasion for a substantial contribution exceeding R30 million to Student Representative Councils (SRCs) nationwide, aimed at alleviating student registration fees and historical debt burdens.
The discussions delved into the role of academia and civil society in tackling unemployment challenges and harnessing the digital economy to broaden educational access, foster innovation and encourage entrepreneurship. A consensus emerged among SRC members and Divisions of Student Affairs officials on cultivating a curriculum that nurtures adaptability and promotes holistic student development.
The Motsepe Foundation, for the second time, allocated one million rand to SPU’s SRC’s Thusa Moithuti Fund, specifically targeting student registration and accommodation hurdles. Dr Moloi-Motsepe emphasised the private sector’s pivotal role in educational advancement and youth empowerment, highlighting how such contributions can dismantle obstacles, instil hope and unlock new prospects. SRC President Letlhogonolo Thintha expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the donation, noting its significance in enabling the SRC to extend its support to students. He called on more businesses and individuals to back SRC-led student support initiatives.

Dean of Student Affairs, Ms Nicole Morris, also expressed her appreciation for the Motsepe Foundation’s donation, acknowledging its role in highlighting the crucial function of Student Affairs in fostering student success. “The donation provides a beacon of hope for our students and underscores the importance of embracing social justice and giving hope for all students to succeed,” she remarked.
This contribution precedes the SRC Thusa Moithuti Golf Day Fundraiser, scheduled for 15 March 2024. The event aims to gather further financial support for students, inviting participation from community members and businesses.
