The DA is profoundly saddened by the news of the passing of Prof Brian O’Connell, former Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). O’Connell passed away on Sunday at the age of 77. The DA described O’Connell as a dedicated leader and visionary. Prof O’Connell served the university with distinction from 2001 to 2014 a period marked by difficult challenges of financial distress and the “merger” process, navigating challenging times with wisdom and resilience.
As a student at UWC in the 1960s, Prof O’Connell returned to his alma mater to lead with passion and commitment, transforming the institution and improving lives. His tireless efforts to address staff retrenchments, financial vulnerabilities, and academic leadership losses have left an indelible mark.
Prof O’Connell’s legacy extends far beyond his tenure, inspiring generations of students, staff, and the broader community. His unwavering dedication to social justice, equality, and academic excellence has created a lasting impact.
Said Mathlodi Maseko MP, DA Spokesperson on Higher Education, “We mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, leader, and champion of higher education. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Prof Brian O’Connell – your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.”
Meanwhile, the Minister Ndzimandehas remembered O’Connell as an “illustrious” educationist and higher education leader who played a seminal role in basic and higher education following the advent of democracy in South Africa.
“The roots of his passion for social justice, equality and freedom must have been planted during his experiences as a student activist at UWC in the mid-1960s and resonated throughout his extraordinary life,” Nzimande said.
