The Free State Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is giving the QwaQwa Government Precinct a much-needed facelift with the installation of a new high-security clear-view perimeter fence.

The Phuthaditjhaba Regional Office, which serves as a hub for government services in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, has for years been secured by an ageing wire mesh fence installed before 1994.

The fence has since become weak and vulnerable due to years of exposure and repeated criminal tampering.Regional Head, Ms Angy Mashinini, said the upgrade was long overdue. The current fence no longer served its purpose.

Its poor condition compromised the safety of officials and state property and made it easy for criminals to gain entry into the precinct, resulting in losses including transformers, bulk electricity cables, government vehicles and other equipment.

The new project, driven by the Regional Office and the Department’s Works Design Team, goes beyond just replacing a fence. It is about restoring safety, dignity and order to a key service point for the people of Thabo Mofutsanyana.

The QwaQwa precinct accommodates eleven departments and agencies: Health, Public Works and Infrastructure, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Human Settlements, Police Roads and Transport, DESTEA, Education, COGTA, SASSA and the Agriculture Vet Clinic.

Once completed, the new fence will enable controlled access, better monitoring of movement within the precinct, and improved protection of government assets. Officials are expected to work with greater peace of mind in a secured environment.

Construction work includes dismantling the old fence, trenching, soil treatment, concrete footing, post erection and installation of new panels and access gates. In addition to the security upgrade, the Department has improved water resilience at the precinct through the installation of a bulk water tank and solar-powered pumping system, which sustains all departments on site and assists neighbouring households during water interruptions.

The Department reaffirmed its mandate as custodian of government buildings, ensuring that public facilities remain safe, functional and accessible to the communities they serve.
