MEC for Social Development, Ms. Nontobeko Vilakazi, visited Umso High School in Colesberg to monitor the school’s state of readiness for the 2026 academic year.
The visit focused on learner attendance, availability of learning and teaching support materials, educator preparedness, school safety and overall school functionality as the academic year begins. MEC Vilakazi engaged with the School Management Team, educators, learners and the School Governing Body to assess readiness and provide encouragement.
MEC Vilakazi commended the Umso High School community following the school’s 84,6% matric pass rate in 2025, urging all stakeholders to consolidate these gains and strengthen a culture of discipline, care and academic excellence.
In her address to learners, MEC Vilakazi spoke strongly against bullying, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and unruly behaviour, highlighting the serious impact these challenges have on learning, discipline and future opportunities.
She further cautioned learners about the effects of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), emphasising how alcohol abuse harms not only individuals but entire communities across generations.
The MEC urged learners to make responsible choices, respect themselves and others, and to prioritise their education as a pathway out of poverty and social challenges.
During the outreach, the MEC also extended support to learners from SS Madikane Primary School, Colesberg Primary School and Lowryville Intermediate School, donating school uniforms, vouchers and sanitary towels to assist learners who are unable to afford basic necessities.
She reaffirmed government’s commitment to learner wellbeing and inclusive education, stressing that no child should be left behind due to socio-economic challenges, and called on communities to continue supporting schools and vulnerable learners.
