Bokang Vincent Mokubung, a student from Bluegumbosch Secondary School in Qwaqwa, Free State, has been named the best learner in South Africa for Mathematics among Quintile 3 schools. Mokubung’s achievement is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and passion for learning.

Mokubung’s journey to becoming a top student was not without its challenges. He attributes his success to his hard work, discipline, and the support of his teachers. “The thing that made me have that discipline is my teacher for always reminding me of the goal that is in front of me,” Mokubung told The Pixley Independent. He specifically thanked his Mathematics teacher, Mr. Thabo Ernest Moroane, for his guidance and encouragement.

Moroane, who has been teaching Mokubung since Grade 9, said he saw potential in the young student and always tried to motivate him to reach his full potential. “I knew that this boy was very special,” Moroane said, beaming with pride. He hopes other students will follow Mokubung’s example by working hard and listening to their teachers.

Despite his success, Mokubung’s final year of school was not without its challenges. He had to balance his academic workload with extracurricular activities, including a special program for Math and Science. “I had to catch up on Life Sciences and Geography on my own,” Mokubung explained.

Mokubung’s advice to students who will be writing matric in 2026 is simple: “Never have excuses for any failure, because failure doesn’t have to be justified.” Moroane adds that students should spend more time with their books and be “present learners” if they want to achieve academic success.

Mokubung is set to start his university journey at the University of Pretoria, where he will study Actuarial Science. His achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of students in the Free State.

The Class of 2025 has shown remarkable resilience and determination in the face of challenges. These students have worked hard to achieve their goals.
