The Northern Cape Department of Education has confirmed that the Augrabies Intermediate School was gutted in flames this afternoon, which caused massive damage to the school infrastructure. Preliminary assessment indicates that 9 classrooms and the Administration Block was totally destroyed in the fire with office equipment as well as the files of the school.
At this stage it is not clear what triggered the fire. The Principal has opened a case of arson at the SAPS. The department is appealling to the general public or any individual with information to come forward and report it to the SAPS.
In a statement the Department will be assisting the school with immediate effect to normalise and stabilise the situation. Infrastructure Unit will be despatched to the school for a formal assessment.
