The MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong, today officiated the sod-turning ceremony of the Root Out the Dust Program in Douglas, Siyancuma Local Municipality.
As part of this initiative, the Department is launching the paving of Ngxila Street in Bongani Location, a road that has long been in poor condition. The R4.9 million project, set to run over four months, includes vegetation control for the safety of motorists and will directly create 50 job opportunities for local residents.
Speaking at the ceremony, MEC Makatong emphasised the importance of ensuring that communities benefit from development projects. “When we bring development, the people in that area must benefit. The least I expect is that when you are given equipment to operate, you should leave with knowledge. When you complete the project, use that knowledge to begin your own business,” she said.
The project not only addresses infrastructure needs but also invests in the skills development of participants, with training included to empower beneficiaries beyond the duration of the project.
Today, the 50 participants identified will sign their contracts, marking the beginning of a project that will improve the lives of residents in Douglas while contributing to local economic empowerment.
