The Northern Cape Provincial Government, represented by MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Mangaliso Matika, today joined learners and educators at Bongani High School in Douglas to mark the official handover of sports equipment donated by the Chinese Consulate.
Speaking at the event, MEC Matika welcomed the donation as a valuable investment in the youth of the province and a reflection of growing ties between the People’s Republic of China and the Northern Cape.
“This gesture is more than the donation of equipment — it is a symbol of friendship, cooperation, and our shared commitment to youth development,” said MEC Matika.
“In communities like Douglas, sport provides a positive alternative to many social challenges. It gives our young people purpose, discipline, and the space to dream.”
The MEC also applauded the ongoing support for local athletic talent, singling out Andrew van Wyk, one of the province’s standout athletes and a proud product of Bongani High School.
Looking ahead, MEC Matika expressed the province’s willingness to expand cooperation with the Chinese Consulate into other areas such as arts and culture, which play a key role in shaping well-rounded learners.
“We are committed to building a future where sport is not just a pastime but a pathway to purpose,” he concluded.
