The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works is urging motorists and visitors to the province to exercise extreme caution, following sustained and heavy rainfall that has impacted several key routes across the Namaqua and Frances Baard Districts.

Gravel roads and various regional routes have become dangerously wet and slippery, increasing the risk of accidents. The Department has commenced the installation of warning signage on hazardous sections to ensure road user safety.

High-risk routes – Namaqua District

Two major roads have been flagged as particularly dangerous and should be approached with utmost caution:

-Kamieskroon Road (DR2951) – known locally as the “Op die Berg” Road

-Khuboes Road (DR3247/3246)

Weather forecasts predict that rainfall in this district will subside by 2:00 AM on Thursday, potentially easing current conditions.

Affected roads – Frances Baard District

While the Kimberley, Jan Kempdorp, Delportshoop, and Ritchie areas have not yet experienced major visible damage due to it being the first day of rain, several roads have been reported as affected but remain drivable:

Kimberley and Surrounding Areas:

-MR811: Douglas to Schmidtsdrift

-DR3355: Olifantshoek to Schmidtsdrift

-DR3354: Vaalharts

The department said it remains committed to public safety and are actively monitoring the situation. Road users are encouraged to remain vigilant and patient as we respond to evolving weather conditions.
