MEC Lebogang Motlhaping, responsible for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) in the Northern Cape, accompanied by the Mayor of the Khâi-Ma Local Municipality, Councillor Estelle Cloete, and the Speaker of Council, Councillor Böck, successfully handed over ten (10) completed houses to beneficiaries at the Onseepkans 90 Housing Project, in the Khâi-Ma Municipality, in the Namakwa District.
This housing project is one of the thirteen (13) housing projects implemented in the Namakwa District, as part of the broader One-Billion-Rand Housing Project. The One-Billion-Rand Housing Project is aimed at expediting housing delivery, eradicating informal settlements, and restoring dignity to communities across the Province.

“Today marks a significant milestone for some of the families of Onseepkans. Secure homeownership is more than just this beautiful brick and mortar structure; it is about restoring dignity, providing security to vulnerable households, and ensuring that our rural communities receive their fair share of development.” said MEC Motlhaping.
A 56-year-old beneficiary, Ms Cecilia Simon, a single mother of two dependents who received her keys from MEC Motlhaping, said, “For years, my family and I braved the harsh winds and heat inside a frail reed structure, but today my tears of struggle have turned into tears of pure joy. Holding the keys to my very own brick home feels like a dream come true, giving my family the safety, comfort, and dignity we have prayed for, for so long.’’
To complement the physical infrastructure, MEC Motlhaping led the planting of indigenous trees across the housing development footprint. He said the greening initiative is about creating livable, sustainable communities and that the trees symbolize new life, growth, and the shared responsibility to preserve the environment for future generations.
The Mayor of Khâi-Ma Local Municipality, Councillor Cloete, urged the new homeowners to cherish and safeguard their properties, cautioning beneficiaries against the temptation of selling their houses for quick financial gain and emphasizing that these homes are priceless inheritances meant to secure their families.
Work continues unabated across the Namakwa District to construct the remaining housing units under the first phase of the One-Billion-Rand Housing Project, which will deliver a total of 628 homes to local families. The Department remains committed to an ongoing handover process, ensuring that completed houses are immediately transferred to deserving beneficiaries as soon as construction is finalized, to avoid vandalism.
