Premier Dr Zamani Saul today officially launched and handed over 30 new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles, marking another important step in improving healthcare access across the Northern Cape. He was joined by the MEC for Health, Mrs Nontobeko Vilakazi.
Of the 30 vehicles, 20 are fully equipped ambulances and 10 are Patient Transport Vehicles. They will be deployed immediately across the province’s five health districts to strengthen both emergency response and planned patient transport services.The new fleet forms part of a larger commitment of 60 EMS vehicles for the 2026/27 financial year – 40 ambulances and 20 patient transport vehicles – at a total cost of R80 million.

The investment is aimed at easing challenges of providing emergency care in a vast province characterised by long distances and remote communities.”We have made a commitment that, in terms of our work as the provincial government we are going to focus on two departments, that is the department of health and education. We want to ensure that the people of the Northern Cape have access to good quality public health, and they’ve got access to good quality public education,” Premier Saul said.
The Premier emphasised that quality public healthcare and education remain the two highest priorities of the provincial government, with reliable emergency services being central to ensuring residents access care when every minute counts.For communities across the province, the new vehicles mean faster response times, safer patient transfers and a stronger safety net for families living far from major hospitals.
