The second annual SPU Community Big Walk on Saturday, 24 February 2024, united 781 walkers from the Kimberley community alongside Sol Plaatje University (SPU) staff and students. This event reaffirmed one of SPU’s strategic objectives: fostering community engagement by building relationships and instilling pride among Kimberley residents and those across the Northern Cape. This year’s event marked an extra-special milestone as we celebrate ten years of existence.
The morning was exciting as participants braved the chilly air for a 4.9km walk celebrating community spirit and camaraderie. Prof Andrew Crouch, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, extended a warm welcome to all and started proceedings by leading a countdown from 10 to zero, symbolising the University’s decade-long journey. He was then joined by the Sol Plaatje Municipality Mayor, Cllr Kagisho Sonyoni, as they walked to promote health and camaraderie within the community.
This walk was perfect for family and friends to connect, offering a sneak peek at the beautiful SPU campuses and engaging in various activities. The event was graced by Kimberley notables actor Thami Mngqolo and radio host Karabo Mothomme (K-9 Star). It featured various entertainment, including children’s activities like jumping castles and pony rides, a live DJ set by Man-Deep, Josh & MJ Musician and DJ Stacey, and a beer garden for adults.
The success of the second annual Community Big Walk, a highlight of the University’s decade celebrations, underscored SPU’s commitment to meaningful external engagement.
