MEC Bentley Vass, responsible for COGHSTA, and Transport, Safety and Liaison, accompanied by the Councillor Riaan Cloete (Namakwa District) and Councillor Sylvia Cloete (Nama-Khoi Municipality), the Head of Department, Rodney Pieterse and other dignitaries, delivered 100 Shova Kalula Bicycles to the St. Cyprian and Sacred Heart Primary Schools in Nababeep, in the Namakwa District.
The aim of the Shova Kalula Bicycle programme started in 2005, is to improve access to education of learners staying between three (3) to five (5) kilometres away from schools, especially in rural areas, but also adapted to suit other needs of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

MEC Vass addressing the learners said ‘’These brand-new bicycles will help you to be on time at school and to attend other extra-mural activities of the school, without many challenges. You must take good care of these bicycles as you strive to secure your future as leaders of tomorrow.’’
During the previous financial year, a total of 256 bicycles, were handed over by the Northern Cape Provincial Government and a total of 345, will be handed over in this current financial year.
Since the inception of this programme in 2005, more than 20,000 bicycles have been handed over in the different districts of the Northern Cape.
