Boegoe Bay
The Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform’s Veterinary Services, accompanied by Animal Health Director Dr Mpho Maja, visited the Alexander Bay Coastal seals in Boegoe Bay and the Cliff Colonies.
Dr Maja’s visit was to assess the extent and severity of the rabies outbreak in Cape Fur seals, to evaluate the potential risks to human and animal health and develop a comprehensive mitigation strategy with her provincial counterparts.
The visit by the National Director follows the recent confirmation of rabies in a Cape Fur Seal, a species known to interact closely with human and domestic animals. The result prompted the department to embark on a free mass vaccination campaign of domestic pets since the 16th till the 20th of September 2024.
The Department is making a passionate plea to all domestic pet owners to continue vaccinating their dogs and cats against rabies.
