Kuruman
A significant road construction project has been introduced to the rural communities in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality of the Northern Cape on Sunday. The Northern Cape MEC for Roads and Public Works, Mme Fufe Makatong (pictured), announced the project, which aims to upgrade a 20km stretch of the MR974 road, connecting the village of Laxey to Lurie and enhancing the district’s economic prospects.
The R300 million project is a crucial part of the road construction development, linking Kuruman town to the rural communities of Maphiniki, Metsimantsi, Laxey, Lurie, Perth, and ending in Heuningvlei. This development is set to provide significant economic benefits to the region by improving infrastructure and connectivity.
MEC Makatong was joined by Joe Morolong Mayor, Cllr Dineo Leeutlwetse-Tshabalala, Chairperson of Economic Development Planning and Tourism in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Ms. Naomie Mokweni, Ward Councilor Emelda Maamogwa, Kgosi Kgolo P. S. Bareki, and HOD Johny MacKay to introduce the project to the community of Perth.
The project is expected to create over 200 job opportunities, significantly contributing to the district’s economic growth. The appointed contractor is expected to commence with site establishment from 9 August 2024. The two year project is expected to complete in August 2026.
“We want to see this project reaching its completion without any hindrance. The appointed contractor will be given the mandate by the department to run things openly and fairly. In terms of sub-contracting, the local SMMEs’ contribution to the project will be open and fair processes will be adhered to. Any service needed will be advertised to the general public to tender for such. The people will compete equally for these opportunities, to avoid infightings amongst the community.”
MEC Makatong also highlighted the role of the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) in ensuring community involvement. The CLO post will be advertised by the appointed contractor, with preference given to local community members.
“I will really want to see the community taking part in the appointment of the CLO by identifying people within their communities to apply for the CLO’s position. This is to ensure that there is a seamless and open process of the appointment of a suitable person, whom the community will be able to work with. Anyone who would want to be a CLO should apply for the job, and all the appointment processes should be followed and adhered to. We want someone from one of the communities where the project is taking place,” stated MEC Makatong.
