The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Northern Cape said in a statement that it was not entirely disappointed with the results of the Emthanjeni Local Municipality Ward 3 by elections held yesterday, but will use the experience in their quest for more votes in the coming provincial and national elections scheduled for 29 May 2024.
The elections were a two-horse race between EFF Candidate Sandile Makandula and African National Congress (ANC) Candidate Mzingisi Mvenya who emerged victorious with 79% of the votes with Makandula at 21%. Makandula is a former ANC Ward 3 councilor who resigned and joined the red berets.
Duggy Makoloi of the EFF told The Pixley Independent that despite the loss the party has seen significant improvement in the ward since the last elections. In 2021 EFF got 79 votes from the 3 Voting Districts of Ward 3, whilst in yesterday’s By-Election EFF got 378 votes in the same Voting Districts.
Said Makoloi, “it is simple because this shows that we did not have an EFF in Ward 3 before; now we can confidently and without any doubt state that we have an EFF in Ward 3 of Emthanjeni Municipality, the “signal” Mama gave us is that EFF is growing in every corner of South Africa, and this is what every Political Party needs to demonstrate its existence.”
According to Makoloi, “Proportional Representation Electoral System, which will be used for the 2024 General Elections dictates that; if there were 2 seats available, ANC would have got 1 seat and the EFF would have also got a 1 seat, you can apply your mind for what would have happened had there been many seats like it is going to happen with National and Provincial Elections.
“Now that’s where superior logic finds its expression, fact is that EFF is growing and people are aligning themselves with the EFF and they are voting for the EFF; this is positive and should be embraced as well as welcomed, ever since EFF has started to contest Elections, it has always doubled it seats after every elections and this is a proper and consistent “signal” that Mama gives us.”
Makoloi appreciated the efforts by EFF Candidate Sandile Makandula and all those that were deployed to Ward 3 By-Election, Ground Forces, Fighters and Voters of Ward 3 Emthanjeni Sub region. According to him the EFF has done very well against all odds and the same attitude must be maintained henceforth and until the 29 May 2024.
