The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Mangaliso Matika, has committed to facilitating a process to resolve a dispute between Karikama High School and the Wafa Football and Netball Clubs over access to a partially developed sports field adjacent to the school in Grikwastad.
The issue relates to the right of use of the school sports fields and the absence of permission granted by the school.The two sporting clubs raised the concern with MEC Matika during the Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) Outreach Programme held in Grikwastad on Wednesday, 09 September 2026. They told the MEC that the school is refusing to allow them to use the sports fields which are partially developed for soccer and netball.

The MEC has requested engagements with relevant stakeholders, including the local municipality, with a view to resolving the impasse.”We appreciate what the teams are doing in taking the kids out of the streets. What we as government must do is to ensure that we afford them the necessary support and that is why we have requested a meeting with the municipality, department of education, the school and the sporting structures so that we can find a solution to the problem,” said MEC Matika.
The department also received and attended to a number of other issues relating to its core mandate during the outreach programme.The EXCO Outreach is a government programme led by the Office of the Premier aimed at assessing active service delivery projects and improving public participation through direct engagement between citizens and provincial leaders.
