The Northern Cape Department of Education welcomed back educators, learners, and support staff to schools across the province on January 14, 2026, marking the start of the new academic year. Provincial officials, including members of the Provincial Government, Legislature, Mayors, and Councillors, visited schools to assess their readiness and ensure a smooth start to the year.
The department reported a generally smooth start to the academic year, with learning and teaching commencing on the first day. However, a major challenge was noted at Pella RK Primary School in the Namakwa District, where an electricity supply issue is being addressed by the infrastructure unit. A contractor is on site working to resolve the problem.
To ensure a successful academic year, the department will conduct a 10-day snapshot survey to identify challenges and shortcomings at schools. Additionally, a headcount of learners will be performed to verify available school space. The department has made significant progress in placing learners, with 30,818 learners already placed and only 188 unplaced learners in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.
