On 7 August, SPU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences hosted a “Think Tank: Mineral Beneficiation” workshop exploring how Geology, Chemistry and the Mining Industry can drive a multidisciplinary research centre to leverage mineral resources in the Northern Cape and South Africa for inclusive growth and sustainability.
Dean of the Faculty, Prof Martin Ntwaeaborwa, welcomed delegates and highlighted SPU’s growth and achievements. The line-up of expert speakers from academia, industry, science councils and the legal sector included Prof James Darkwa (University of Johannesburg), Dr James Papo (Mintek), Mr Mosa Mabuza (Council for Geoscience), Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi (Johannesburg Bar) and Adv Phemelo Sehunelo (Strata Energy Minerals Resources).
They shared insights on unlocking value from raw materials through innovation and sustainability, bridging the gap between extraction and product development, aligning beneficiation with economic growth, identifying regional opportunities, navigating funding landscapes, and building strong academic-industry partnerships.
The workshop laid the groundwork for positioning SPU as a future hub for beneficiation research and innovation. Source-SPU
