The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul, recently led the commemoration of Human Rights Day accompanied by MEC Blennies, MEC Vosloo, MEC Bloem, MEC Monakali, MEC Fufu, MEC Fienies, MEC Vass, the Executive Mayor of Pixley ka Seme District Municipality U.R Itumeleng and the local Mayor of Kareeberg Cllr. RC Jikella and NC Public Service Commissioner Mr A.B Gxoyiya.
The Provincial Human Rights Day Celebration was commemorated under the theme, ‘Three Decades of Respect For & Promotion of Human Rights’, in Carnarvon in the Pixley Ka Seme District.
The day is celebrated in remembrance of the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, where the apartheid police and others wounded fatally shot peaceful protestors who marched against discriminatory pass laws.
In his address, Dr Saul called on the people of the Northern Cape and Kareeberg to partner with the Provincial Government to improve the quality of the lives of the people of this Province. Various government departments exhibited their products and services at stalls during the event. The day concluded with entertainment by local artists, who were all awarded cash prizes of R20 000.
