SAASS is a prominent SADC organisation dedicated to supporting students and early career professionals in archaeology through networking, mentorship, and educational programmes. This recognition reflects both Ms Phepheng’s expertise and SPU’s strong offering in heritage studies – a niche area within our academic programmes, directly aligned with the rich heritage of the Northern Cape.

Ms Phepheng chose SPU for her academic journey due to the University’s distinctive research opportunities and its location in the Northern Cape, an area rich in human and natural heritage. She highlights the region’s museums, galleries, and archival collections, which hold untold stories that sparked her interest in archaeology and heritage studies. Driven by a deep fascination with history and ancient civilisations, Ms Phepheng is passionate about uncovering the past, as she believes it allows her to connect with diverse cultures and appreciate their unique narratives. “The thrill of discovery – whether it’s uncovering artefacts or reconstructing historical events – fuels my commitment to this field. I am also dedicated to preserving cultural heritage for future generations,” she shares.

SPU played a pivotal role in Ms Phepheng’s development as a scholar and professional. The University’s focus on community engagement and research allowed her to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world settings. She credits the supportive Faculty of Humanities, particularly Dr Joseph Chikumbirike and Ms Itumeleng Masiteng, as well as the diverse student body, for creating an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation – essential to her growth as both a researcher and a professional.

Her motivation to run for Vice Chair of SAASS stems from her belief in the student community’s potential to positively impact the field of archaeology. During her tenure, she aims to foster a collaborative environment where students can share ideas, gain mentorship, and amplify their voices in decision-making processes.

Ms Phepheng’s election to this leadership role not only showcases her individual achievements but also underscores SPU’s role in producing graduates who excel in their fields. SPU proudly celebrates her success and said it looked forward to witnessing the impact she will make in the archaeology community. Source SPU

Ms Shantanise Phepheng (pictured), a graduate of SPU and current Master’s student specialising in Heritage

[15

post-905","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education
["GET
