O\u2019Connell passed away on Sunday at the age of 77. The DA described O\u2019Connell as a dedicated leader and visionary. Prof O’Connell served the university with distinction from 2001 to 2014 a period marked by difficult challenges of financial distress and the \u201cmerger\u201d process, navigating challenging times with wisdom and resilience.<\/p>\n

As a student at UWC in the 1960s, Prof O’Connell returned to his alma mater to lead with passion and commitment, transforming the institution and improving lives. His tireless efforts to address staff retrenchments, financial vulnerabilities, and academic leadership losses have left an indelible mark.<\/p>\n
