For many young people, failing matric can feel like the end of the road. For Bacwadi Dimakatso, however, it became the beginning of a remarkable journey defined by resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in her potential.<\/p>\n

Dimakatso first wrote her matric examinations in 2011. Looking back, she admits that she was not entirely focused on her studies at the time. Having attended a township school where learners went for extended periods without a Physical Sciences teacher, she faced significant academic challenges. Mathematics and Physical Sciences were her core subjects, yet she struggled with both.<\/p>\n

“I honestly did not expect to pass those subjects,” she says. “Not only did we not have a physics teacher for most of the time, but I also realised that numbers were not my strongest point.”<\/p>\n

Determined to obtain her matric certificate, Dimakatso rewrote her examinations four times after her initial attempt. While a lack of academic support contributed to her struggles, she also acknowledges that she failed to seek help when she needed it.<\/p>\n

“The truth is, I thought I could do it on my own. Looking back now, I realise I should have asked for assistance much earlier,” she says.<\/p>\n

After her third attempt, exhaustion and disappointment nearly led her to give up. Watching her peers move on to universities and employment opportunities while she remained behind was emotionally draining. The uncertainty surrounding her future became increasingly difficult to bear.<\/p>\n

“There were moments when I questioned everything,” she recalls. “I knew I wanted a better future, and I knew I was capable, but it felt like I was standing still while everyone else was moving forward.”<\/p>\n

At her lowest point, encouragement came from two people who believed in her potential \u2014 her former Physical Sciences teacher and her brother, Dithapelo. They advised her to reconsider her subject choices and pursue a path better suited to her strengths. Taking their advice, she changed her subjects from Mathematics and Physical Sciences to Mathematical Literacy and Business Studies.<\/p>\n

That decision proved to be a turning point.<\/p>\n

With renewed determination, Dimakatso successfully completed her matric and set her sights on higher education. However, gaining admission to university came with its own challenges. During the Fees Must Fall protests, campus operations were disrupted and administrative processes became difficult to navigate. Initially, her application faced obstacles because her matric results had not yet been formally combined.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the persistence of her brother and her own determination, she was eventually granted an opportunity to register.<\/p>\n

Financial difficulties soon followed. While she had enough money for registration fees, she did not have funding for her full tuition. Nevertheless, she remained committed to her studies and found ways to continue.<\/p>\n

Ironically, university presented her with another challenge she thought she had left behind \u2014 mathematics. A compulsory module required her to work with numbers once again. Instead of allowing fear to take over, she changed her mindset.<\/p>\n

“I decided to stop telling myself that I couldn’t do maths,” she says. “I worked hard and ended up passing the module with a distinction.”<\/p>\n

Today, Bacwadi Dimakatso holds two university qualifications, including an Honours Degree in Logistics from North-West University. She remains passionate about education and hopes to pursue a master’s degree and eventually a PhD in the future.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on her journey, she encourages young people facing academic setbacks to remain hopeful and persistent.<\/p>\n

“Ask for help when you need it. Attend extra classes, set goals for yourself and don’t be afraid to make changes if something isn’t working. Most importantly, never give up on yourself and never believe that it’s too late.”<\/p>\n

Dimakatso’s story stands as a powerful reminder that success is not determined by how quickly one reaches their destination, but by the courage to keep going despite life’s setbacks. Through perseverance, faith, and hard work, she transformed failure into achievement and became an inspiration to many who may be facing similar challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
