The MEC for Roads and Public Works, Mme Fufe Makatong, was joined by NCOP Member Hon. Patrick Mabilo, Member of Parliament Ms. Rachel Adams, Head of Department Dr. Johnny McKay, and Frances Baard, District Manager, Mr. Vuyani Mhlauli in leading a series of impactful community upliftment projects across Kimberley in commemoration of International Mandela Day 2025, under the theme: \u201cIt\u2019s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n
In her heartwarming address, MEC Makatong emphasized that Mandela Day is not about rhetoric, but about meaningful action; \u201cService is not about speeches, it is about showing up, rolling up our sleeves, and making a difference where it matters most.<\/p>\n
“Today, we lead by example and take action to restore dignity, fight poverty, and uplift the most vulnerable among us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MEC told The Pixley Independent that the Northern Cape government is committed to continuously restoring the dignity of its citizens, with the Roodepan community being no exception.\u00a0 This was as Mandela Day activities began in Freesia Street, Roodepan, where the delegation intervened to assist the Afrika family, a household of 11 individuals living in a cramped two-bedroom home. The Department partnered with the community to paint and refurbish the home, install new ceilings and doors, extend the lounge area and lay new tiles to create a safer and warmer environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not just building walls, we are restoring dignity, privacy, and hope,\u201d said MEC Makatong. The delegation also visited Kgatelopele, Little Star, and Wonderland Cr\u00e8ches, collectively serving over 50 children, some as young as 9 months. These early learning centers received refreshed and cleaned facilities, donations of essential learning and play equipment.<\/p>\n

“This visit was surely an affirmation of their critical role in breaking the cycle of poverty.\u00a0These centers are the heartbeat of our future.\u00a0 Supporting them is an investment in our children\u2019s dreams,\u201d MEC Makatong highlighted.<\/p>\n

In Platfontein, the team concluded the Day of Impact by restoring the dignity of Gogo Elia Shimite, a 93-year-old grandmother whose home lacked basic insulation and safety features. The Department assisted by renovating the structure, installing new windows and a proper roof, building a fireplace, and adding a new electrical meter.\u00a0 Gogo Shimite now has a warm, safe home to live out her golden years with dignity and pride.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
