African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed the party\u2019s commitment to social and economic transformation, emphasizing poverty alleviation, job creation, and service delivery improvements during the ANC Northern Cape January 8 Statement Provincial Rally.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Bergsig Sports Ground, Mashatile highlighted key priorities stemming from the party\u2019s 113th-anniversary celebration in Khayelitsha, where President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the January 8 Statement. The Deputy President underscored the ANC\u2019s dedication to grassroots engagement, stating that the party remains deeply connected to the people and their daily struggles.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ANC has always been rooted in the struggles of the working class and the poor. Our role is to champion the fight against poverty, unemployment, and inequality,\u201d Mashatile said.<\/p>\n
Mashatile acknowledged the socio-economic difficulties facing the Northern Cape, particularly in the Namakwa region, where poverty and unemployment remain major concerns. He cited limited job opportunities, particularly among the youth, as a pressing issue requiring urgent intervention.<\/p>\n
Illegal mining, or “zama zama” activities, was also a focal point of his address. He reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to tackling unauthorized mining operations through \u2018Operation Val\u2019umgodi,\u2019 which has led to multiple arrests and crackdowns on illicit mining enterprises. \u201cThis initiative, in collaboration with SAPS, SANDF, and private security firms, aims to restore stability and protect the region\u2019s economy,\u201d Mashatile explained.<\/p>\n
Another critical issue raised was land reform, with Mashatile stating that the recently signed Expropriation Bill would address land redistribution challenges. He assured residents that the bill seeks to empower farmers and promote equitable access to land.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Mashatile emphasized the need to improve governance and service delivery to restore public trust in the ANC. He acknowledged that factionalism and internal divisions within the party had weakened its effectiveness, calling for a renewed commitment to unity and ethical leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ANC\u2019s renewal process must be evident in our daily actions. We must ensure our branches and leadership structures reflect discipline, dedication, and a focus on community development,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n
Mashatile further reiterated the party\u2019s focus on economic growth, pledging that the ANC would take decisive action to create employment and boost local economies. He cited the recent postponement of the 2025 Budget Speech as a necessary step to ensure a budget that aligns with the country\u2019s economic expansion goals while maintaining fiscal stability.<\/p>\n
The Deputy President praised the Northern Cape ANC structures for their success in recent by-elections, where the party won 13 out of 18 contested wards. He noted that this momentum must translate into effective governance and service delivery, particularly in addressing water shortages, improving infrastructure, and revitalizing local economies.<\/p>\n
As South Africa assumes the G20 Presidency, Mashatile highlighted the opportunity for the country to champion African development on the global stage. He encouraged Northern Cape residents to take pride in their province\u2019s rich history and contribution to national progress.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn telling South Africa\u2019s story to the world, the Northern Cape plays a crucial role in showcasing our resilience, history, and potential,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
With the 2024 General Elections behind and the ANC preparing for local government elections, Mashatile\u2019s address set the tone for the party\u2019s ongoing efforts to rebuild public trust, enhance service delivery, and drive sustainable development in the province and beyond.<\/p>\n
