Pixley Independent is a district black entrepreneurs initiative focusing mainly on community news and development. The publication is based in De Aar and targets primarily the Pixley Kaseme District and the greater Northern Cape. The newspaper is circulated in the Northern Cape free of charge.<\/p>\n
The newspaper was started in 2018 after realising the need for comprehensive coverage of developmental news particularly in rural areas. Pixley Independent is an 8 -12 page tabloid published twice a month, distributed free of charge.<\/p>\n
Much as young people in rural areas may be exposed to other forms of mainstream media, including radio and TV, in a series of discussions with various stakeholders, they indicated a yearning to know more about the development and achievements of local pe, people which is not profiled on existing national platforms.<\/p>\n
Pixley Independent strives to encourage and inspire young people to become interested in participating in communal activities in their areas. The publication will also nurture a reading culture, especially among young people.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Currently, the newspaper’s editorial content is in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans. The publication is not affiliated with any political party.<\/p>\n
The publication is being distributed free of charge to the communities in the province. Readers have warmly received it as a breath of fresh air because of its riveting approach to community news.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Its primary goal is to add value to the lives of the people in rural communities, accessing information from provincial and local government processes, sports federations, unions and government departments.<\/p>\n
At Pixley Independent, we believe very strongly in bridging the community news divide. Our distribution will cover local businesses and public institutions in our areas of operation but will also increase to the more significant parts of the province.<\/p>\n
The project is in line with the Media Development and Diversity mandate, which seeks to promote ownership of media by historically disadvantaged communities as stipulated in section 3(i) of the Media Development and Diversity Act 2002, encourage ownership and control of, and access to media by historically disadvantaged communities as well as by historically diminished indigenous language and cultural groups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
